The step that returned nothing

Step one of the chain is supposed to extract the order number. On a bad day it returns the word unknown. The chain pushes on. Step three writes a warm reply about an order that does not exist. Nothing crashed, and that is the problem. Something has to sit between the steps. A validation gate. Plain code checks the shape of step one's output. If the order number is missing, the chain retries with a stricter prompt, or stops and asks a human. Chains need gates the way pipelines need tests. Every handoff is a place to catch a bad result before it spreads.
